Michael Wagener is a multi-platinum producer and engineer working out of his WireWorld Studios, located close to Nashville, Tennessee. His credits include Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Alice Cooper, Extreme, Janet Jackson, Queen and Accept. Mr. Wagener is particularly renown for his skills in crafting powerful guitar sounds which he forms by employing a stunning array of multiple amps, speaker cabinets and microphones. Rock guitar tone has been a bastion of analogue craftsmanship and musicians’ skill for expression, yet with the advent of amp modelers, digital simulations and sound presets transformed the landscape. I sat down with Michael to discuss outsourcing studio work, the art of re-amplification, modelers vs. profilers and the musician’s place in all of this.
